The Battle is the Lord’s – Part 1
Introduction:
Every day of our lives we are in a spiritual battle. Many Christians, without even realizing it, have allowed Satan to gain control of their lives. When we become content with maintaining the status quo, we have given Satan the victory. God desires for us to be living in spiritual victory and producing abundant fruit (John 15).
Many of us have never seen true spiritual warfare because we are not engaging in the battle. You will not know how big of a threat you are to Satan until you start accomplishing something for God. When we stand for truth, we become part of the battle. Some of us need to get back into the battle and others need to join the fight.
Many of us probably think of the story of David and Goliath as just a children’s Sunday school lesson. No doubt, if you’ve been in church any length of time, you have heard the story numerous times. If you are not familiar with the story or if you would like to read it again, you can find it in I Samuel 17.
It is easy to miss many spiritual applications when we are all too familiar with a certain Bible story. Over the next three weeks, we are going to take a look at several truths that I hope will help you to gain victory as you fight a spiritual battle in your own life.
The Israelite army in this story pictures the complacent Christian who is content to sit on the sideline and do nothing.
These Christians are living defeated lives and not claiming the victory that is already theirs.
I John 5:4-5,
“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”
Satan’s first goal is to keep a person from accepting Christ. If he fails at this, his next objective is to keep them out of the fight and from winning others to Christ. The answers to the problems in our country do not lie with the leadership, but with Christians who are not engaging in the battle.
It is no wonder that the world doesn’t take us seriously. Far too long we have led mediocre lives, not truly standing for what we say we believe. We need a generation of Christians that will stand up and take their faith seriously.
Goliath represents the enemy who is ready to wage war on any who dare to make a stand and fight.
Satan has already been defeated at Calvary when Christ triumphed over death.
Hebrews 2:14,
“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.”
David is a picture or type of Christ and represents the deliverance of Israel.
He also pictures the victorious Christian who chooses to make a stand. We can have victory over sin and death through the power of the cross.
II Corinthians 2:14,
“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.”
I Corinthians 15:57,
“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
I John 5:4,
“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”
Do you desire victory in your Christian life? Are you currently living a life defeated?
God desires for His children to live in victory over sin and experience the blessings of an abundant Christian life. God has given us the necessary tools to win the battle, but we must use them if we are to defeat sin and the devil.
I hope you will come back next week as we discuss The Plight of the Christian and The Proven Weapon!
