Heart Checkup: A Scripture Saturated Heart

Heart Check-up: A Scripture Saturated Heart

A Scripture-Saturated Heart

Is your heart saturated with the precious truths of Scripture?

Psalm 37:31, “The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.”

Jeremiah 15:16, “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.”

The word SATURATE means to supply or fill to fullness. If a sponge is saturated, it is filled with water or liquid until it can hold no more. If our lives are saturated with the Word of God, His Word fills every crevice of our hearts and minds, and permeates our souls.

Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

God’s Word reveals what our hearts are really like.

There are four aspects of SATURATING our Hearts with the Word of God:

A Scripture Saturated Heart Reads God’s Word

Proverbs 3:3, “Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:”

Every day you need to be in your Bible. This is so important to your Christian walk and developing a relationship with the Lord.

If you want to get to know someone better, you begin by listening to her and asking questions. We listen to God by reading His Word. We find answers to the questions we have about Him in the Bible.

Read with purpose. Don’t just randomly open your Bible and start reading it. There are so many different plans out there to accommodate where you currently are in your spiritual walk.

If you have never done so, I would encourage you to make a commitment to read through your Bible cover to cover. It’s great if you can accomplish this in a year. But if not, just start at the beginning and read it through, however long it takes.

If you are not ready to tackle reading all the way through, there are many different topical plans you can find online. Most of these have shorter passages you can read each day. And you can pick a plan according to what you are going through in your life right now.

A Scripture Saturated Heart Memorizes God’s Word

Psalm 40:8, “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.”

Memorizing God’s Word is so important to our Christian walk. God will bring the verses to mind that we have memorized when we are going through a difficult time or facing temptations. Memorized verses are a reservoir we can draw from when God’s Word is not readily at hand to read.

Some verses every Christian should memorize:

A Scripture Saturated Heart Meditates upon God’s Word

Psalm 19:14, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”

Experts estimate that we think between 60-80,000 thoughts a day. That is quite amazing! But how many of these are good thoughts, much less thoughts filled with the Word of God?

As we memorize God’s Word, we can meditate on those verses throughout the day. Some people find it helpful to write Scripture in our journal. Or, write a verse on a card to carry with you throughout the day.

A Scripture Saturated Heart Obeys God’s Word

Proverbs 4:4, “He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.”

We can read God’s Word, memorize God’s Word and even meditate upon God’s Word, but all that is futile if we choose not to obey it.

Application is the most important part. We know God’s Word has truly changed us when we live it out in our lives. Part of this is allowing ourselves to be controlled by the Holy Spirit and not living under the power of our sinful flesh. Every choice we make should be run through the sieve of God’s Word.
