Paleo Chunky Applesauce Recipe

Last Friday we took a trip to the local pumpkin patch to get some apples and let our little one play. Growing up we have fond memories of spending a day or two canning applesauce as a family. Mom always used Golden Delicious apples and that is what I generally use, but feel free to use your favorite kind. Depending on the kind you use and their sweetness, you may want to adjust the coconut sugar. This Paleo applesauce recipe adds some extra sweetness without the unhealthy processed sugars.

We don’t have all the paraphernalia for canning, so I generally just freeze ours for the winter. It always holds up well through the season. My favorite tool for mushing the apples is the Pampered Chef Mix ‘N Chop.* I believe you can find an off brand on Amazon or Walmart as well.*

Ingredients:

  • 1 Peck of Golden Delicious Apples
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 3 Tablespoons (or to taste) Coconut Sugar
  • 1-2 tsp ground Cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground Ginger (optional)
  • Dash (or two) of ground Cloves (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Peel & core apples. Quarter, wash, and place in 6 quart or larger pot.
  2. Add water to pot. Cook on a low temperature for 1-2 hours (cooking time may vary depending on exact temp). Keep an eye on them and stir occasionally. Be sure not to cook too high or apples will burn.
  3. Once apples are soft, mash them using Mix ‘N Chop or similar utensil.
  4. Add remaining ingredients to the pot and incorporate while applesauce is still warm. Be sure coconut sugar is fully mixed in and dissolved.
  5. Allow to cool and place into storage containers.
  6. Yields approximately 4 quarts.
