Word for the Year – Meditate
Memorizing Scripture was a vital part of my life as a child and later as a Bible college student. Unfortunately, as an adult, I have greatly neglected this vital component of my Christian walk. One of my goals for this year is to reincorporate this practice back into my life. As my word for this year, I have chosen the word meditate.
Memorization of Scripture should be a fundamental aspect of every believer’s life. However, meditation of the Scriptures should be paramount. If we simply memorize a verse but quickly forget it and fail to apply it, it is of little to no use in our walk with the Lord. Meditating on Scripture throughout the day is foundational to the application of God’s Word.
Verse for the Year
Isaiah 26:3, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
This verse does not include the word meditate, but I do believe it conveys my aspiration for the upcoming year. My desire is to find peace in the midst of the storms in my life by keeping my heart and mind fixed on Christ. When I am meditating on His Word, His working in my life, and His ways, I am displaying a simple trust in Him.
Three Biblical Focuses for Meditation:
Not only is it important to meditate upon the word of God, it is also vitally important for us to consider His working in our lives and His ways (or path) He would have us to walk. When our thoughts are right, our actions will be right. It is so critically essential to be careful what we allow our hearts and minds to meditate upon. (I plan to dig deeper into this in a future blog post, so stay tuned!)
God’s Word
Psalm 1:2, “But his delight is in the law (word) of the LORD; and in his law (word) doth he meditate day and night.”
God’s Works
Psalm 77:12, “I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.”
God’s Ways
Psalm 119:15, “I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.”
While some may not see the value in New Year’s resolutions or setting goals, I find this a great time for reflecting on the past and refocusing on what lies ahead. I am excited to see what the Lord has for us in this upcoming year as we dedicate it to serving Him!
What plans have you made for the upcoming year? I would love to hear in the comments below!
Nice to meet you, Julia! My book on Christian meditation publishes in 2019, and I think I’m a little jealous of your word choice 🙂 Sharing this on Twitter and Pinterest.
Oh, that’s a great topic for a book! Not sure I’ve actually read any that deal with that solely. Look forward to reading it! Thanks for sharing!
Great word for the year! And I love your 3 biblical focuses to correlate with it.

Hello Julia. Nice to meet you via Blessing Bloggers. My word for this year is Courage. I am already beginning to see why God gave me this word. In 2019 I hope to publish my next book titled The Furnace of Affliction: How God uses our Pain and Suffering for His purpose. I love your word: meditate. I write about the importance of it in my upcoming book. Taking time to search out what God is wanting to say and reveal to us is critical for every Christian. Again a pleasure to “meet” you here today. Have a fantastic week and may God bless you in all your endeavors in 2019.
Courage is a great word too! Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by! Hope you have a wonderful year ahead of you!
